ART Awards Logo

The 2009 ART Awards

The second annual Advancement in Radio Technology Awards will be recognized at the 2009 NAB Radio Show. These awards present an opportunity for your products to be recognized among your peers in the industry. Nominations are now being accepted for products that have been available (not just announced) from August 1, 2008, to
July 31, 2009, and should have found a practical use in radio broadcasting facilities (including terrestrial, Internet and satellite).

Help us build our list of nominees. Send the list of your qualifying products (a link to the product description will help, too) to radio@penton.com.

The temperature of the industry is improving, and August is a great month to start your NAB Radio promotions with Radio magazine.

Here we are in the "dog days" of summer. We're still trying to shake the economic duldrums. The IABM (the voice of broadcast and media technology supply industry worldwide) conducted a survey in May of this year to "take the temperature" of the broadcast industry in general. 68% of respondents felt that the next quarter will be the same or better than last quarter. And looking ahead to the next six months, 29% thought things are improving.

I would like to be optimistic myself. Our August issue of Radio magazine is a great lead-in to the NAB Radio Show coming up in September in Philadelphia. In a world where other publications are cutting back on the amount of issues printed and downsizing their publications, Radio magazine remains consistent. We deliver editorial content that is excellent reference material. Consequently, your ad is seen for a longer period of time in a technology oriented publication like Radio magazine. Studies conducted on the industry publications show that Radio magazine is kept in the radio stations an average of 12 to 13 months. So exposure for your products goes farther in Radio magazine!

I hope you consider Radio magazine a priority when making your ad plans. When every ad dollar MUST count, Radio magazine gives you better visibility to more decision makers than any other publication in the radio industry.

August Editorial Highlights

Trends in Technology
It used to be that streaming online was a novelty or a luxury. Now it's a necessity. But stations still have questions: build your own streaming server or use a service provider? What encoding format? This streaming audio update will provide all the answers readers seek.

Facility Showcase:
WILQ-FM

On Oct. 9, 2008, vandals stole a truck on Bald Eagle Mountain near Williamsport, PA. During their joy ride, they drove through the WILQ-FM transmitter building. Fortunately for the station, no air time was lost because the truck missed vital equipment, however, the building had significant damange. This began the process of moving the station to an auxiliary site and rebuilding the main transmitter site. Tom Atkins details the process and the challenges, particularly given the winter weather.

Insight to IBOC
Are stations prepared to implement higher digital levels? We talk to several groups to gauge readiness and gain insight into future planning for a potential digital level power increase for HD Radio.

Managing Technology:
Kevin McNamara investigates new options in back-up power. Generators and UPS systems are common, but they are not the only option. In addition, many stations are looking for greener choices as well.

Field Reports
Chris Wygal listens to the JBL Control 2P monitors, and Tim Diehl takes measurements with the Microgen Electronics TS9080.
