Zune Adds FM Tagging
New York - Sep 8, 2008 - Nine radio broadcast groups have committed to providing song tags using their existing infrastructure. The effort is in conjunction with Microsoft's announcement of a new set of features for all Zune portable media players that uses the built-in FM radio tuner to let users tag and retrieve songs broadcast from any song-tagging enabled FM radio station.
More than 450 FM radio stations operated by Beasley, Bonneville, CBS Radio, Citadel, Clear Channel Radio, Cox Radio, Emmis, Entercom and Greater Media will broadcast the FM song tags via RBDS. The tags are saved on the user's media player. This form of tagging was developed by Jump2Go and Clear Channel Radio.
The ability to tag songs has been added to the HD Radio system for use with receivers that have Ipod docks. This latest announcement adds the function to analog broadcasts via RBDS, and takes advantage of the built-in FM tuner on the Zune devices.
Newer Zune devices also have Wi-fi connectivity built-in, so a user can purchase tagged songs when he enters a Wi-fi hotspot directly from the player.
