BBC Extends Shut-down Trials of Some MW Transmitters, Returns Others to Air

October 9, 2012

London - Oct 9, 2012 - As we reported in August 2012, the BBC shut down some MW transmitters in the U.K. to gauge the reaction from the listening public. According to Radio Today, hardly any listeners complained during the five-week test; so few, in fact, that the trials will continue in two areas.

Radio Nottingham's MW transmitter and Radio Kent's relay at Rusthall (near Tunbridge Wells) will remain off-air. They may not return, because the BBC wants to evaluate the effect of a long-term outage. BBC Radio Merseyside and Lincolnshire, and BBC Radio Kent's primary MW transmitter at Littlebourne have returned to the air.
