Dutch Public Broadcaster NPO Expands DAB+ Footprint

January 26, 2014

Hilversum, The Netherlands - Jan 25, 2014 - Dutch public broadcaster NPO is making great progress in providing nationwide coverage via DAB+. Two weeks ago, KPN Broadcast Services (transmitter operator for the DAB+ network) turned on transmitters at Leeuwarden and Venlo, thus providing coverage in the Friesland and northern Limburg areas. On Jan. 17 KPN turned on Bergen op Zoom and Dedemsvaart, providing coverage in the western part of Noord-Brabant, the northeastern part of Overijssel, and the southern part of Drenthe, according to RadioNL.

KPN is also working on a project to link the DAB+ stations with their FM counterparts. It's setting up a system whereby the receiver will temporarily switch to the FM station if it encounters a weak DAB+ signal, using an ID code that is similar to a PI code sent via FM RDS.
