    News from the Convention

    NAB Launches NoPerformanceTax.org
    Washington, DC - The National Association of Broadcasters unveiled a new website, www.NoPerformanceTax.org, which will serve as the organization's newest advocacy tool in its efforts against enacting a performance fee music aired on terrestrial radio.

    Among its resources, the website provides stations a portal to download, air and share radio spots opposing the performance fee, as well as an array of online banner ads for use on station Web sites and sample letters to members of Congress. The site also provides users with background information on the performance fee issue, video clips from Congressional hearings and Capitol Hill events, NAB news releases, and news media coverage of the performance fee issue.

    Stations can request login rights to access materials in the Broadcaster Action Center. E-mail Maureen Walker.


    Continental Hosts DRM Panel at NAB
    Las Vegas - On April 21 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Continental Electronics booth (N7007) at the NAB Show, executives from several companies will discuss the benefits, features, receivers and transmitters of the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) system. The panelists include Ruxandra Obreja (BBC and DRM chair), Michel Penneroux (TDF), Jochen Huber(Transradio), Alexander Zink (Fraunhofer), Lindsay Cornell (BBC), Darko Cvjetko (Riz) and Dan Dickey (Continental Electronics).

    A Q&A session will be held after the presentations. A drinks reception will follow after that. To attend, contact the DRM Project Office at projectoffice@drm.org.

    Continental will also hold in-booth DRM briefings daily at 3:30 p.m.

    The H4n's onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for proper localization without phase shift. Each mic capsule can be rotated from 90 degrees (standard) to 120 degrees (wide-angle) stereo. The H4n allows four0channel simultaneous recording by using its onboard mics with either external mics or direct inputs. Choose up to 24-bit/96kHz linear PCM WAV files a variety of MP3 formats from 320kb/s down to 48kb/s.

  • Condomania hits Las Vegas. A multitude of developers ranging from Donald Trump to MGM Mirage announce plans for high-rise luxury condominium projects. By 2010, 10,000 to 15,000 condominium-hotel units are expected to be added to the current room inventory.
  • Steve Wynn changes the name for Las Vegas' newest megaresort from La Reve to Wynn Las Vegas.

    Disney Studios Group President Mark Zoradi to Present Keynote at 2009 NAB Show
    Washington, DC - Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group, will present a keynote address during the 2009 NAB Show. Speaking during the Show's Digital Cinema Summit on Sunday, April 19, Zoradi will offer first-hand insights and news about digital 3D as well as 3D delivery across multiple platforms.

    The Digital Cinema Summit, "3D Cinema & Beyond: Lens to Living Room," will be held April 18-19, and is produced in partnership with the Society of Motion Picture Television Engineers (SMPTE).

    "The ongoing digital shift in our everyday lives continues to create new opportunities for content distributors to engage with a broader audience," said Zoradi. "During this challenging economic climate, it is crucial that entertainment companies, broadcasters and content creators operate with creative and business strategies that help to drive revenue across multiple platforms and channels.     Bridge-IT allows the user to tailor the codec to suit individual requirements. Encode-only or decode-only versions or both are available. Bridge-IT has an SD card slot for failover playback of prerecorded audio, and the unit's menus can be fully programmed using comprehensive front-panel hardware that includes a keypad and LCD display, or by using a Web interface. It is designed for desktop use, or two units can be installed side-by-side in a purpose-built 1RU mounting bracket. Bridge-IT comes with a range of high performance broadcast algorithms plus optional AAC LC and AAC HE. Standard algorithms include 16-bit 22kHz linear audio at less than 12ms encode delay for uncompromised audio, G.711 G.722, MPEG Layer 2 and Tieline Music. The Tieline Music Plus algorithm also provides 22kHz mono, dual mono and stereo with 20ms encode delay at under 100kb/s. Bridge-IT has all the broadcast input connectors you would expect on a fully-featured codec. Simultaneous analog and digital AES/EBU audio outputs are provided on XLR connectors and it includes a 1/4" stereo headphone output.

    The DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio, a portable four-track digital recorder, retains the ease-of-use of cassette-based four-track recorders but updates it with CD-quality digital recording. The recorder uses a set of dedicated knobs and buttons. A pair of unbalanced 1/4" inputs accept mic or line signals, or musicians can employ the built-in stereo microphone. A stereo mixdown track is also included, and tracks or mixes can be transferred to a computer using USB 2.0. Smaller than a paperback book, the DP-004 is portable enough to bring anywhere. The DP-004 records to SD Card media, and a 1GB card is included. It features autopunch recording, track editing and an undo function. A metronome and tuner are built-in, and the Input A jack accepts a guitar-level signal for direct recording.

    Abacast On-Demand was designed from the ground up as an end-to-end, commercial-quality solution. It offers both Abacast HTTP Delivery and Abacast Peer-Assisted Delivery options that can be flexibly interchanged based on customer type, content type, or business model. The system supports common video formats, is a Web-based console, has multiple delivery options, commercial quality service and smart analytics. The HTTP option delivers content including video on demand, video and music downloads, and games and software downloads. All file sizes are supported. The Peer-Assisted option distributes on-demand video or other on-demand content with a secure, high-quality, stable, resilient network that uses up to 80 percent less bandwidth.

    The NX25 offers digital pre-correction, 2.7MHz direct digital modulation and 88 percent efficiency. All NX Series transmitters are unique in their ability to add an optional HD Radio Exgine embedded signal generator card directly within the transmitter. Nautel's module-level design of the NX Series provides redundancy and enables customers to interchange NX25 parts if needed with an NX50 or other NX series transmitter. Nautel's Advanced User Interface is included on the NX25. This 17" color LCD screen with configurable displays includes real-time impedance measurement, instrument grade spectrum and audio analyzers, IBOC modulation analyzer, module-level monitoring and control/logging of all functions. The AUI can be controlled by touch screen or via a mouse and keyboard; users also have 100 percent remote access to the NX25 via a Web browser.
