NAB Announces 2005 Engineering Achievement Awards
Washington - Feb 7, 2005 - Each year, the NAB presents its Radio and Television Engineering Achievement Awards. The awards, first established in 1959, are presented to individuals for their significant contributions that have advanced the state of the art of broadcast engineering. This year''s winners, Oded Bendov and Milford Smith, will be honored at the NAB2005 Technology Luncheon on April 20 in Las Vegas where Dr. Robert W. Lucky, engineer, author and commentator on the state and future of data communications technology, will provide the keynote address.
Radio Engineering Achievement Award Winner: Milford K. Smith
Milford K. Smith is vice president of radio engineering for Greater Media, one of the nation''s largest privately owned radio companies. He has held this position for the past 19 years. For the 11 years preceeding this position, he held a similar position with First Media, another large private radio group owner. Prior to that he spent several years with Tribune Broadcasting in New York. He has also been a major contributor to industry advisory and standardization activities. He is the senior co-chairman of the National Radio Systems Committee DAB Subcommittee, a position he has held for nearly a decade, and is a past chairman of the NAB Digital Radio Committee, an advisory committee to the NAB's Radio Board of Directors.
Smith is known for his engineering talents and people skills. Long before the industry consolidation of the 90s He was taking disparate and sometimes dilapidated radio properties and transforming them into engineering showpieces. From the initial pre-purchase evaluation to the purchase itself, to establishing temporary studio facilities to keep the station on the air, to location of new studio/office space, to design and build out of the new space, to upgrade of the transmission system, he would (and still does) embark upon ambitious consolidation projects, doing a great majority of the work himself.
Some of the more exciting and innovative engineering projects tackled by Smith include the Peachtree Plaza hotel FM transmission system, considered by many for over 20 years to be the finest RF facility in the Atlanta market; the Prudential Center FM transmission system, where he led the effort to design and replace an existing transmission facility for four FM stations while all remained on the air, then some years later adding three more stations without causing disruption to the other facilities; and, the relocation of KLSX Los Angeles to Mt. Wilson, where he came up with a unique strategy to relocate this station from an inferior site, in the process creating a full-market signal. More recently Smith and his staff at Greater Media have been involved in an ambitious IBOC digital radio build out. In 2005, Greater Media expects to be the first radio group to have fully converted all their stations to IBOC.
Television Engineering Achievement Award Winner: Oded Bendov
Dr. Oded Bendov is president of TV Transmission Antenna Group, a company established in 2003 and dedicated to the development of new technologies, design, and consulting services to broadcasters and television set manufacturers. In 2004, the Metropolitan TV Alliance (MTVA), the umbrella group of New York City broadcasters, awarded Bendov a contract to design the master antenna tower atop the Freedom Tower, the new building to be built on the site of the World Trade Center. Planned to be completed in 2009, the main digital TV transmission facilities will serve the New York metropolitan area from the top of the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan, with an overall height height, including antenna, exceeding 2,000 feet.
Bendov received his Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University in 1967, the year he joined RCA. For most of his career, Bendov worked for RCA and then Dielectric. He worked at the RCA Antenna Engineering Center, which in 1986 was acquired by Dielectric Communications where he was senior vice president and chief scientist. Bendov has been a major contributor to the analysis and design of a large number of analog and digital antenna installations, the most complex being at the World Trade Center in New York City and Mt. Sutro in San Francisco. Bendov was also the principal architect of the industry''s transition to circularly polarized TV antennas. Circular polarization for television transmission was recognized with an Emmy Technical Achievement Award in 1984.
Bendov holds several patents and has published many technical papers on television antennas, propagation, and interference. He is the author of chapters on transmitting antennas in the TV Engineering Handbook and the Encyclopedia for Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Rohde and Schwarz
UPV: A compact instrument for audio measurements of analog and digital interfaces. The unit offers dual-channel signal processing and generation, as well as a sampling rate up to 192kHz. Other features include the recording and replaying of audio signals, comprehensive FFT analysis and user-programmable filters for analyzers and generators.
Content server and modulator
DRM Exciter Package: The DRM exciter package features a content server and modulator and will be demonstrated at NAB within a Harris' low-power DAX AM transmitter. The DRM content server encodes audio and combines it with digital program information into one bandwidth-efficient, digital bitstream that is sent to the transmitter. The DRM modulator, situated inside the transmitter cabinet, accepts the digitally prepared signal and controls the transmitter to drive the digital signal to the receiver.
Transient voltage surge suppression
MGE UPS Systems
Eclipse-T: This commercial transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) equipment is a complement to its line of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). The surge suppressor series includes six products with single- and three-phase models offering peak capacities ranging from 100kA to 500kA in modular and non-modular panels. All models feature an audible alarm, LED indicators and dry contacts to notify users of system status, as well as individually fused metal-oxide varistors for optimized protection. Most models also include a surge counter (excluding the E-T100W) and a Lightning Temp fuse for added reliability and to prevent thermal runaway if MOVs are damaged.
TB-6D, TB-6R: Initially designed to interface with the S2 mixer, the TB-6D desktop and TB-6R rack-mount units can be used for general inter-studio talkback. There are also versions that work with the Sonifex Station Master studio switcher (TB-SD and TB-SR). Each studio has a desktop, a rack-mount or mixer-mounted intercom, containing a row of six switch buttons. Each switch button connects to another studio and routes the presenter's audio to it.

Produced in partnership with the Society of Broadcast Engineers, the Broadcast Engineering Conference enters its 59th year by presenting topics that cover the entire range of radio broadcast engineering and more.
A timetable of the BEC and other key events is in the March issue of Radio magazine. This is not a complete timetable, but includes the sessions and events that are most likely of the greatest interest to you, the Radio magazine reader.
Saturday and Sunday Sessions
The activities begin on Saturday, April 16 with the Ennes Workshop, which is solely arranged by the SBE. Fred Baumgartner, CPBE CBNT, and Lewis Zager arranged the agenda. The topic of the workshop is Building the Next Generation Master Control, and it will be held in room N110 of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). The session will include opening remarks from John Poray, executive director of the SBE. Three portions of the workshop have direct radio themes: Calculating Reliability, Fred Baumgartner, Leitch; Quality Master Control Room Audio Monitoring, Frank Foti, Omnia Audio; and Radio Master Control Design and Implementation, Steve Davis, Clear Channel Radio.
Sunday's sessions all relate to radio's future, with an emphasis on IBOC. The day's events begin with the Broadcast Engineering Conference Keynote by Lynn Claudy, senior vice president of science and technology for the NAB. The keynote will be held in room N112. The radio portion then moves to room N110 for an update on the latest activity of the NRSC from Charles Morgan, senior vice president of Susquehanna Radio and active member of the NRSC.
The remainder of the morning sessions cover the various aspects of surround sound for IBOC. The session, titled Surround Sound - A New Frontier for Radio includes presentations from Frank Foti of Omnia Audio, David Frerichs of Coding Technologies, Robert Reams of Neural Audio and Shigeru Aoki of the Japan FM Network.
After lunch, H. Donald Messer of the International Broadcasting Bureau will provide an update on International radio with a presentation called The DRM Digital Modulation System in the Mediumwave (AM) Band.
The Sunday afternoon sessions are all about IBOC. The session chairmen are Norm Philips of Susquehanna and Chriss Scherer, editor of Radio magazine. Logitek Plans Users' Group Meeting at NAB

Station content importer
Imediaimport Module: The Imediaimport Module automatically imports station content from a variety of sources including but not limited to: third-party multi-track editors, newsroom applications, FTP sites, network folders and NPR Content Depot. Using the Cart Chunk and ID3 Tagging systems, users of Imediaimport can have any content automatically placed and titled into an Imediatouch system.
DSP audio processor
Air Tools Orion 8088: Dubbed Orion 8x8 Analog I/O DSP, this processor is equipped with eight line-level analog inputs and outputs. The processor uses a pair of analog devices 66MHz SHARC processors to create virtual audio pathways and processing modules that replicate dedicated hardware devices in the physical world. The Studio Matrix Designer application is used to create these signal routes and processing chains on a Windows PC. Parameter settings can be assigned to any of the 1,000 onboard preset locations and recalled on demand via RS-232 commands from the stations automation package. Audio routing between units is handled via the Symlink bus. This proprietary interconnect supports the free exchange of up to 64 channels of audio and control over CAT-5 cable.
Propagation Systems Inc
IBOC antenna: These FM antennas and FM antenna/combiner combinations are designed for FM broadcasters looking to initiate IBOC FM broadcasting. Whichever system the broadcaster decides to install, PSI can supply the entire RF package of transmission line, combiners and antennas. In the separate amplification approach, PSI can supply FM antennas using the DoubleV, Power-Tiller, or multiple varieties of panel antennas for single or multiple station applications. PSI also provides the combiner and reject load necessary for this approach. Using circular or horizontal polarization, directional or non-directional, PSI can provide a DoubleV, Power-Tiller or a selection of panel types.
Analog audio cable
Brilliance 9451P and 9451DP: These cables are plenum versions of Belden's 9451 and 9451D analog audio cables designed for line-level audio connections, audio distribution equipment and studio wiring with room-to-room plenum. The cables include a single-pair construction, the 9451P, and a Siamese construction, the 9451DP. The cables can be easily installed because the Beldfoil bonded-foil shield is bonded to the cable jacket and can be stripped for termination in a single step using conventional cable stripping tools. Color-coding provides easy channel identification for stereo applications.
Cardioid condenser mic
AT2020: This side-address condenser microphone features a custom-engineered low-mass diaphragm, providing extended frequency response plus the ability to handle extremely high SPL levels. The mic has a fixed cardioid polar pattern to allow isolation of the desired sound source and features a flat, extended frequency response (20 - 20,000Hz), high SPL handling capability (144dB), and a dynamic range of 124dB. The microphone requires 48V phantom power and output from the mic is via a low-impedance, three-pin XLRM-type connector.
Bi-amplified active monitors
8000 MDE series: This series of bi-amplified active monitors is comprised of three models: the 8030A, 8040A and 8050A. The 8030A, the smallest of the series, features a five-inch bass driver along with a 3/4-inch tweeter. The free-field frequency response is 58Hz to 20kHz (+/-2dB). Peak SPL per pair is 108dB, driven by a pair of 40W amplifiers. The intermediate sized 8040A incorporates a six-inch woofer and a 3/4-inch tweeter. The free-field frequency response is 48Hz to 20kHz (+/-2dB). Peak SPL per pair is 115dB, achieved using 90W amplifiers for each driver. The 8050A is the largest model. It uses an eight-inch bass driver and a one-inch tweeter. This speaker produces peak a SPL of 120dB with a free-field frequency response of 38Hz to 20kHz (+/-2dB). Bass and treble amplification is 150W and 120W.
