New Norwegian Radio Station Causes Run on DAB+ Receivers

October 10, 2013

Oslo, Norway - Oct 10, 2013 - The new Norwegian station NRK P1+ went on the air on Oct. 2, and it's caused a run on DAB radios in at least a couple of stores, because the station is available only via DAB+.

Tore Eiken, who works at the electronics outlet Coop Obs!Lade in Trondheim, said "It's been absolutely crazy here the last few days. People say they want a DAB radio so they can hear the new radio channel NRK."

Electronics industry statistics show that sales of DAB+ radios are up by 59% compared with the same period last year, according to NRK.no.

The electronics chain Elkjøp has also experienced a significant increase in the sales of DAB+ radios. "There is no doubt that we have experienced a P1 + effect in our sales. Wednesday and Thursday last week we sold about twice as many radios as on a normal day," said the communication manager at Elkjøp, Line Oddekalv. He also said that compared with the same week last year, the chain has experienced an increase of 310 percent in sales of DAB+ radios.
