Norway Continues DAB+ Expansion

March 26, 2014

Oslo - Mar 17, 2014 - The Norwegian government has allocated €22 million to supply DAB+ reception inside all tunnels that exceed 500 meters in length throughout the country. There are about 260 tunnels that meet that requirement.

Norway has been very successful with the transition to DAB+. Last year about 220,000 DAB+ radios were sold in cars (radios and adaptors), according to RadioNL. The total number of radios sold there is about 1.5 million; the population of the country is 5 million.

The current plan in Norway is for the sun-setting of FM in 2017. A warning is now given to buyers of FM radios, stating that they will lose functionality in as little as three years. Not surprisingly then, three out of five radios sold have DAB+ capability.
