Skein, Norway—Radio P5 Telemark has been established as the 5th DAB network for Norway. Initially, the network covers about 130,000 people in the southern end of Telemark and Grenland. Radio P5 has a license for 2 DAB ‘areas'' inside of Telemark County. It is anticipated that the entire network will be completed by the end of the year, according to Radio.no.
Frode Stian Andersen, Executive Editor and General Manager of Radio P5, said that an e-mail regarding the availability of the new network for carriage of local stations has been sent and that 18 stations have expressed interest.
Andersen believes DAB is important for local radio, because it will allow for a wider audience and fewer financial constraints, with respect to currently-licensed FM stations.
Norway plans to ‘sunset'' the FM services nationwide in 2017, but some local radio stations will continue to broadcast on their local FM transmitters even after digitization is completed. Radios with DAB technology will also receive FM broadcasts. The final terms for the digitization of local radio will be investigated in a separate White Paper in spring 2015.
