Sony Says Sayonara to Floppies

April 27, 2010

Apr 27, 2010 - Sony has announced that it will cease production of 1.44MB, 3.5" floppy disks in March 2011. Sales of the disks will cease by the end of 2010. Various reports say that Japan is still a large user of the now outdated storage disks, having sold 12 million of them in 2009.

The 1.44MB format disk was introduced in 1981. In 1998, Apple sold the iMac without a floppy drive at all. It's been downhill ever since.

Little by little, floppy drives disappeared from PCs over the years. Chances are the first PC with Windows XP did not include a floppy drive as a standard feature.
