Sweden's Liberal Party wants to invest in Digital Radio

May 11, 2011

Stockholm - May 11, 2011 - Sweden's Liberal Party (one member of the four-party coalition) has issued a policy statement entitled "A Liberal Investment in the Future of Radio" in which it asks that the country's public broadcasting service, Sveriges Radio, be given the financial means by which it can expand in to digital broadcasting.

"Norway and Denmark have already begun the transition to digital radio, as well as Britain and France," the document goes on to say. "The Swedes, who are keen to see themselves as early adopters, risk being left behind. We want to ensure a coordinated start with Swedish radio and private radio jointly launching a transition to digital radio." The document also suggests that the transition should be financed through a direct subsidy from the country's broadcasting fund.

The original report (in Swedish) is online.
