Swiss Broadcasters Expect FM Sunset in 2020

December 3, 2013

Berne, Switzerland - Dec 2, 2013 - FM transmissions will continue throughout Switzerland at least through 2019, according to Nancy Wayland Bigler of the Swiss Office of Communications (OFCOM). The Swiss broadcast industry expects that 2020 will see the end of FM in the country, at least according to Blick.ch. The Swiss government will decide the fate of FM in that country by 2017 at the latest.

The dual transmission of analog FM and DAB+ is very expensive, according to Wayland Bigler. While 38 DAB+ transmitter sites are used to cover the country, between 200 and 300 are needed for FM transmission. However, even with coverage for nearly all of the country, DAB+ usage is still only between 20 and 30 percent of Swiss radio listening. "FM is the last analog technology in telecommunications and in the electronic media," said Wayland Bigler.
