R&S Supports 5G Signal Generation Based on Verizon Specs

MUNICH—Rohde & Schwarz has taken a step forward in the 5G evolution, announcing that through recent tests it has determined that its signal generation and analysis instruments support the basic characteristics of the 5G Verizon signal.

Verizon’s published technical specifications of a 5G signal describe its physical layer characteristics. The specified signal is derived from LTE and adapted to be used at cm frequencies, either 28 GHz or 39 GHz. The proprietary signal is a multicarrier OFDM signal with a subcarrier spacing of 75 kHz. The signal aims for a bandwidth of 100 MHz per component carrier, with up to eight carriers capable of being aggregated. The basic mode of operation for the signal is TDD.

R&S’ SMW200A vector signal generator, equipped with the SMW-K114 5G waveform candidate software option, allows for OFDM signals to be configured with the required 75 kHz subcarrier spacing and 100 MHz bandwidth. Preamble and user data settings can create 5G signals with Verizon’s basic specifications, enabling reference symbols to be set and data modulation such as QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM to be applied.

Using the FS-K96 OFDM vector signal analysis software with the FSW signal and spectrum analyzer allows the full characterization of such a 5G signal by loading a configuration file into the software that reflects the parameterization of the 5G Verizon signal.

The R&S gear was able to test the EVM of a 5G signal at 28 GHz with virtually no impact on the measurement.
