AMSTERDAMThere are currently a number of audio-over-IP systems and formats being used in the audio industry, such as Audinates Dante, WheatNet-IP, LiveWire Plus and Ravenna. But even with various formats, according to Merging Technologies President and CEO Claude Cellier, the transition to a universal standard may not be far off, thanks to the emergence for AES67.

That was one of the major points of the recent How Will AES67 Will Affect the Industry panel, held Feb. 10, at ISE 2016 in Amsterdam.

Cellier spoke with Radio magazine about what was discussed during the panel.

The great news of AES67 is that it has been able to coalesce all these various formats, which are not that different in essence, said Cellier. All these industries and all these companies have a pretty, relatively speaking, easy task to get to AES67 implementation.

The panelwhich in addition to Cellier featured Arie van den Broek, CEO of Archwave AG, Terry Holton of Yamaha and Ethan Wetzell of Bosch, and was moderated by Rich Zwibel, vice president of Systems Stragegy QSCalso discussed the recently announced AES70 standard. Cellier and the panel described AES70 as a perfect compliment to AES67, which handles transportation and synchronization; AES70 adds control.

These are really the perfect combination of two standards, which have now been followed within two years, so that we have a universal solution in the future, explained Cellier.

Cellier says it is now up to the companies operating with Layer 3 technology to decide how it will support both AES67 and AES70. But he believes that a solid foundation has been formed.

All the Layer 3 players have agreed to support AES67, which would tend to make me think that there is a very high chance that this is going to be the ubiquitous, common format for the next 25 years.
