May 2, 2012 - In an effort to raise awareness of high school radio stations and their activities, High School Radio Day has been created and set to be held May 16, 2012.
Oct. 9, 2011, was the first ever College Radio Day launched to bring awareness to college (and some high school) radio stations worldwide. Shortly after, WBFH Station Manager Pete Bowers attended the National College Media Convention in Orlando and sat in on the session entitled "College Radio Day" led by Founder and President Rob Quicke. During the session, Bowers thought, "Why not have a High School Radio Day?" While high school stations can register with College Radio Day, Bowers thought a day dedicated to just high school stations was in order.
Before proceeding, Bowers bounced the idea off Quicke who gave it a thumbs up. Both agreed that High School Radio Day would not compete with College Radio Day, but the two would complement each other. Bowers suggested that High School Radio Day be held in May, which is the month the first high school radio station signed on the air in 1949. HSRD would bring awareness to high school stations and start to promote College Radio Day, which will be Oct. 2, 2012.
The plan is to make High School Radio Day an annual event. Stations can register to participate.
Plans in the works include a nationwide Web chat with participating stations on May 16. High school radio students and advisers will be able to share thoughts through video streaming.
