MCLEAN, VA.Anyone who knows Milford ''Smitty'' Smith immediately associates his name with engineering at Greater Media. That was true for 34 years, but on Sept. 22 Smitty joined the consulting firm of Khanna and Guill henceforth to be known as Smith, Khanna and Guill as a principal.
''This is a tremendously exciting move,'' Smith said. ''It brings me the opportunity to work with a number of broadcasters around the county on some interesting projects. I also intend to have a lot of fun in so doing."
Smitty joins Sudhir "Sid" Khanna and Robert "Bob" Guill, each with decades of experience with all manner of broadcast engineering projects. Smith adds that while the firm's main office is in McLean, Va., he will continue to work from his home in Lawrenceville, N.J.
One of the firm's first new assignments with Smith on board will be providing engineering assistance to the National Association of Broadcasters for some upcoming projects. Smith knows NAB well, in part from having chaired the National Radio Systems Committee, which NAB sponsors jointly with the Consumer Technology Association.
"I'm both humbled and fortunate to join Bob and Sid in their long established, well respected practice and very much look forward to working with my many good friends in the industry in this new and exciting role. I can promise a long time broadcaster's perspective on any project undertaken and, just as I did during my 34 years at Greater Media, promise to 'do it right,' every time. I look forward to helping stations achieve the very best technical facilities possible.''
Smitty has been involved in broadcast engineering for his entire career, most recently as VP Engineering with Greater Media. He is immediate past chairperson of the NRSC and has a long involvement in industry technical matters. He is a recipient of the NAB Radio Engineering Achievement Award and Radio World's Excellence in Engineering award. He routinely speaks at and chairs technical conferences and is a member of numerous broadcast technical organizations.
