NABEF Names Eight Tech Apprentices

Five recent grads have been placed at radio stations, three will will intern at TV stations

WASHINGTON — The NAB Education Foundation has announced the 2018 participants for its Technology Apprenticeship Program.

“The need for innovative, technology-proficient talent in our industry is growing,” NABEF President Marcellus Alexander said in a press release. “The TAP program addresses this need by attracting and preparing the next generation of engineers and technology professionals for essential roles at radio and television stations.”

During the course of a free six-month long program, recent graduates are exposed to broadcast industry trends through a two-month paid apprenticeship, NAB Show trip, networking, training from the International Association for Broadcast & Media Technology Suppliers and a workshop at NAB headquarters in Washington. Participants also will become Certified Broadcast Technologists by the Society of Broadcast Engineers.

This year’s participants are Allen Johnson, Ivan Morales, Joshua Mondy, Zipporah Mondy, Rachel Torres, Demetrius Allen Green, Haemi Jo and Jason Tober.

Johnson has been placed at R&F Communications Inc.’s WDKN(AM) in Dickson, Tenn. Morales will work at Entercom Communications’ KCBS(FM in Los Angeles. Both Mondys have been chosen to work at Mondy-Burke Broadcasting Network’s KJIW(FM) in Helena, Ark. Torres has been placed at iHeartMedia’s WMAG(FM) in Greensboro, N.C. Green will work at Hearst Television’s WTAE(TV) in Pittsburgh, Pa. Jo has been selected for The E.W. Scripps Company’s WTVF(TV) in Nashville, Tenn. Tober will work for Scripps’ WFTS(TV) in Tampa, Fla.

The program’s 2018 sponsors include Sinclair Broadcast Group, IEEE Broadcast Technology Society, Southwest Airlines and TVNewsCheck.
