NATE Unveils Gin Pole Guidelines Safety Resource

Dec 20, 2013 11:32 AM

Watertown, SD - Dec 19, 2013 - The National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) unveiled a new safety resource for utilizing gin poles in the telecommunications industry. The objective of the NATE Training Guidelines for Working on Communication and Similar Structures with a Gin Pole and Associated Equipment document is to provide minimum worker training guidelines that are required for gin pole use for work relating to the installation, alteration and maintenance of communications structures.

"This resource is a set of guidelines that formally outlines and describes a comprehensive training and verification program for gin pole users," said engineer and tower specialist Ernie Jones of Consolidated Engineering in Lynnville, IN. "Details described in TIA-1019-A for this sophisticated and specialized lifting system are the basis for this material. This guide starts with reasonable industry expected pre-requisite training and ends with a field verification process to provide a complete package for responsible and knowledgeable users of gin poles," added Jones. "Additionally, an outline for qualification of existing gin poles for applicable lift charts and use per TIA-1019-A is also included."

"Many tower contractors utilize gin poles on a daily basis and it is important that the guidelines outlined in this resource are adhered to in order to create a safe work environment when utilizing this equipment on tower sites," stated NATE Chairwoman Pat Cipov.

The NATE Training Guidelines for Working on Communication and Similar Structures with a Gin Pole and Associated Equipment is available online as a free resource for member companies in the member login section of the NATE website. This resource is also available for purchase in a print format to members and non-members.
