Alexandria, VA - May 21, 2014 NewBay Media has announced a new editor and new leadership structure for Radio magazine, the radio broadcast technology leader. Shane Toven, CBRE, CBNT, joins as editor, Steven Bell is promoted to publisher, and Erin Shipps is promoted to managing editor.

"Radio is a key component of NewBay's growing family of technology publications, says Carmel King, Executive Vice President of the company's Broadcast & Video Group. "We see this as an exciting time an opportunity to extend its presence and to challenge ourselves to improve Radio further in print, in person, and online; to help radio's technical managers manage new platforms; and to deepen their broadcast education and flourish in their professional careers. We will also continue to expand the brand's reach and reader value through the magazine, web, and social platforms."

"Shane Toven is a rising star in the ranks of radio engineers," says Paul McLane, editorial director for Broadcast, Broadcast & Video Group. "He brings a rare combination of technical and management skills, a familiarity with new media and new platforms, and a presence in local and national radio engineering circles. He joins an expert team in Steven Bell and Erin Shipps, who have helped guide Radio so ably during a time of great change in both the radio industry and in business-to-business trade media."

Toven becomes the third editor of Radio since its launch as a standalone magazine in 1994. His predecessor, Chriss Scherer, resigned in March to pursue other opportunities, but remains a valued contributor and advisor.

Editor Shane Toven is a broadcast engineer with 20 years of experience designing, constructing and maintaining studio and transmitter facilities. He is chairman of Chapter 48 of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and a member of the board of directors at the Association of Public Radio Engineers. He currently is director of engineering for Wyoming Public Media; he will leave that position but advise WPM on a part-time basis through its transition to his successor. He began his radio technical career in his teens and has also worked for Townsquare Media, ENCO Systems, Minnesota Public Radio and KAXE(FM) in Grand Rapids, MN. He will be based in Laramie, WY.

Publisher Steven Bell, formerly Associate Publisher, joined Radio, then BE Radio, in 1995. He led the brand through an increase in frequency from six to 14 issues per year. He is a former marketing director for Intertec Publishing. Bell has been heard on the radio in Kansas City for 36 years, currently on KCFX-101 the Fox, a classic rock station and flagship affiliate of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Managing Editor Erin Shipps, formerly senior associate editor, joined Radio in 2007 as associate editor; prior to that she was assistant editor for Gas Engine Magazine and copy editor for Motorcycle Classics, both titles at Ogden Publications in Topeka, KS. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in journalism with an emphasis in magazines in 2005.

NewBay Media acquired Radio in 2011.
