The Radio Magazine Pick Hits of the 2008 NAB Show
Las Vegas - Apr 15, 2008 - The Radio magazine Pick Hits of the 2008 NAB Show were selected by the magazine's Pick Hits panel on the afternoon of April 16 during the NAB Show. This group of respected and experienced engineers selected the top 15 new products introduced at the convention that show innovation, fill a genuine need in radio broadcasting and are expected to ship within the year.

NAB, Ibiquity Push Effort on Updated HD Radio Exporter Technology
Las Vegas - Apr 13, 2008 - The National Association of Broadcasters and Ibiquity unveiled a partnership with four broadcast equipment manufacturers to accelerate the commercial development of HD Radio with the introduction of embedded Exporters. The goal of the effort was to reduce a radio station's cost to upgrade to HD Radio.

Until now, the HD Radio Exporter was a PC-based device. The new technology reduces the size and manufacturing cost of the hardware to solid-state DSP components. The HD Radio Exporter combines multicast audio channels and advanced data services along with a station's main audio channel into a format suitable for transmission. BE, Continental, Harris and Nautel are displaying the results of this effort in their booths at the NAB Show.

The project began in 2006, and the newly formed NAB HD Radio Technology Advancement Task Force was charged with overseeing the effort, culminating in today's announcement. The NAB has provided funding for this project, and NAB member stations are being offered a discount on purchasing the equipment if the order is placed at the convention.

NRSC Adopts Updated Digital Radio Broadcasting Standard
Las Vegas - Apr 12, 2008 - The National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) has adopted an updated version of its in-band/on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcasting standard. NRSC-5-B, In-band/on-channel Digital Radio Broadcasting Standard, was adopted by the Digital Radio Broadcasting (DRB) Subcommittee, which is co-chaired by Andy Laird, vice president and chief technology officer, Journal Broadcast Group; and Mike Bergman, director of research and development, Digital Broadcast, Kenwood Americas Corporation. This latest version includes some editorial updates as well as a revised FM IBOC RF mask that was submitted to the NRSC by Ibiquity Digital Corporation, developers of the HD Radio technology upon which NRSC-5-B is based.

The document will be available to the public through the NRSC website following a final, procedural review that will take approximately four weeks.

Radio Coalition Launches "Radio Heard Here" Campaign
Washington, DC - Apr 15, 2008 - The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) and HD Digital Radio Alliance are launching a series of efforts to underscore the broadening versatility of radio content, the its technology and the continuing relevance of the medium in Americans' lives. According to a release from the group, the multiyear initiative is expected to "turn up the volume on radio's reemerging presence in a digital world."

"The sleeping giant has awakened," said David Rehr, NAB president and CEO. "For close to a century, radio has had a ubiquitous and integral presence in our nation's life, and today more than 235 million Americans turn to radio each week to be informed and entertained. Despite its universal presence, or perhaps because of it, radio's abiding impact has been overlooked and underappreciated. The medium, however, has a bright future, and Radio Heard Here will help showcase radio's robust advances, particularly in harnessing new technology and expanding and enhancing the diversity of its content."

Radio Heard Here includes promotional and educational initiatives. Among them:

An advertising campaign aimed at consumers. The overarching theme of the campaign will be "Radio Heard Here," which will underscore the ubiquitous nature of the medium.

  • An initiative that connects industry players online to the most up-to-date information, that creates a series of blogs to more effectively engage and inform radio insiders and consumers alike, and that helps teach the creative community within advertising agencies and universities how to successfully write and place radio advertising.
  • An effort to reach key influencers and other targeted audiences with information about the resurgence and impact of radio.
  • A fun and often irreverent element that produces video shorts for posting on Youtube, Google Video, My Space, Metacafe and other online outlets and that shares perspectives about radio in entertaining and informative ways.

The effort is a continuation of the Radio 2020 campaign that was launched at the 2007 NAB Radio Show. This work specifies some of the actions that are planned, particularly those aimed at younger consumers. This younger audience is finding greater interest in forms of media other than radio.

Credit is due to the coalition for recognizing the declining radio audience, but we will have to wait and see if anything comes from the effort.

NAB Announces Crystal Radio Award Winners
Las Vegas - Apr 15, 2008 - The National Association of Broadcasters has named 10 winners of the NAB Crystal Radio Awards. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service. The 2008 NAB Crystal Radio Award recipients:

Registered Attendees: 105,259
International Attendees: 28,310 (record high)
News Media Attendees: 1,296

International and news media attendance figures are included in the overall registration number. The figures are based on pre-show and onsite registration. Final registration data will be available following the convention.

Last year's attendance topped out at 108,232.

NAB Launches Website to Boost Locally Focused Community Service Initiatives
Las Vegas - The NAB announced the debut of NAB Spot Center, a website designed to help broadcasters plan and implement locally-focused community service initiatives. NAB Show attendees had the opportunity to view the website at the Public Service Pavilion for the duration of the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

NAB Spot Center provides radio and television stations with public service announcements ranging from the prevention of underage drinking to promoting awareness of the upcoming presidential election.

"Throughout history, radio and television stations have proven to be a valuable partner in a wide array of initiatives aimed at bettering America and our local communities," said NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr. "This new website underscores our unrelenting commitment to serving the public interest, convenience and necessity."

Axia Audio Sells 1,000 Consoles
Cleveland - Apr 11, 2008 - Axia Audio has sold its 1,000th radio console. Axia was launched in 2003, introducing its approach of using standard switched Ethernet to transport real-time, linear audio.

Liquid Compass recently renewed contracts with two radio group owners, Entercom Communications and Lincoln Financial Media. The two groups represent more than 100 terrestrial radio stations in top 50 markets throughout the U.S.

Cox Radio will deploy Everyzing's EZ SEO and EZ Search across all of its 68 radio station websites, managed via the Ramp console. Ramp enables media companies to control the reach, access, monetization and protection of their online audio and video content. radio has chosen Internap Network Services Corporation's ad delivery service and content delivery network to monetize its website and deliver classical music to new audiences around the world., a Connecticut-based Internet radio station and streaming audio content provider, offers 24/7 classical music programming hosted by on-air personalities.

Day Sequerra and Neural Audio Partner for Hardware Solutions
Las Vegas - Neural Audio Corporation and Day Sequerra announced a long-term partnership to combine innovative software and hardware solutions.

"The strong adoption of our Neural-THX surround sound technologies and signal processing for digital audio requires us to partner with companies that can deliver the highest level of professional equipment," says Geir Skaaden, CEO of Neural Audio.

"We are very confident and excited for the impact our partnership can make in the audio industry," said David Day, president of Day Sequerra.

Nautel to Offer 'Orban Inside' Audio Processing
Las Vegas - Apr 17, 2008 - Nautel and Circuit Research Labs, parent company of Orban/CRL, have entered into an agreement for Nautel to license Orban's audio processing algorithms and develop embedded solutions for Nautel transmitters. This capability will integrate Orban audio processing with new Nautel transmitters and use Nautel's control and display capabilities.

The first product to support the embedded audio processing will be Nautel's NV40 44kW solid-state FM transmitter. The NV40 received the Radio magazine Pick Hit Award at the 2008 NAB Show. The all-digital embedded audio processor consists of a daughter card that plugs into the FM exciter. All control is via the Nautel Advanced User Interface, which for the NV40 means a 17" touch-screen interface for local use and remote access the local interface via the Web.
