SBE Launches SBE Internships Online
Indianapolis - May 29, 2008 - The Society of Broadcast Engineers has created the SBE Internships Online. Similar in concept to the SBE Jobs Online where employers can post job openings and members can search for jobs or post their own resumes, SBE Internships Online uses the same model but is for student internships only. In keeping with its commitment to education and recruitment of engineering talent, SBE Internships Online offers the opportunity for students interested in broadcast engineering to search for summer internships that will give them real-world experience in the field of broadcast engineering.

Companies seeking interns are encouraged to use the SBE Internships Online to let students know of the opportunities they have available. The Society of Broadcast Engineers is also reaching out to its partner colleges and student chapters to raise the awareness of the website.

To place or view internship opportunities on the SBE Internships Online site, go to Anyone can post an internship, and anyone can view listings. Membership in the SBE is not required.

The site has just been launched, and the SBE wants companies to provide internship info to post.

NAB Accepting Nominations for HD Radio Multicast Award
Washington, DC - Jun 2, 2008 - The National Association of Broadcasters is accepting nominations for the NAB HD Radio Multicast Award. The deadline for submitting entries is July 1, 2008.

Established in 2007, the award recognizes an HD Radio multicast station at the forefront of creating unique, innovative or groundbreaking programming. The award will be presented during The NAB Radio Show, Sept. 17-19, in Austin, TX.

NATE Hosts Tailgate Talks
Watertown, SD - Jun 2, 2008 - The National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) hosted a brief webcast titled Tailgate Talks to educate NATE members about the importance of job site safety. Don Doty, NATE chairman of the board of directors and presenter, encouraged the association's members to take action and play a lead role in changing the way the industry operates.

During the 15-minute webcast, Doty presented NATE's top five recommendations for crews to discuss during daily tailgate meetings before work begins:

  1. Identify potential hazards (weather, environmental hazards, tower corrosion or structural damage, electrical hazards, other hazards unique to the job at hand)
  2. Conduct pre-climb check of personal protective equipment
  3. 100 percent tie-off is mandatory
  4. Lock-out/tag-out procedures, and
  5. What to do in an emergency

The daily tailgate meetings should take less than 10 minutes. The tips presented are more for tower climbers and climbing crew supervisors and not so much for site managers directly, but the information presented is a good review for anyone involved with tower climbing.

"Safety isn't something that can be thought of every once in a while, it's a daily commitment," said Doty. "We are taking this opportunity to remind our members that the only acceptable way to do a job is to do it safely. As leaders at their companies, they must reinforce expectations and help avoid mistakes that cost lives."

Greater Media's Smyth Comments on Localism Rule Changes
Braintree, MA - Jun 4, 2008 - In his monthly column posted on the company's website, Peter Smyth, president and CEO of Greater Media, comments on aspects of the FCC's recent notice of proposed rulemaking on broadcast localism. Smyth said, "After two decades of radio consolidation, the Commission has suggested a variety of initiatives intended to promote the 'local' part of 'local broadcasting.'"

In particular, Smyth comments on the FCC's suggestion to require radio stations to maintain their main studios within their cities of license. Smyth notes that many stations have studios just outside the borders of their cities of license. Some are just over the line for various reasons, others are collocated with sister stations in consolidated facilities. Smyth added, "A license originally granted to a suburban community that is now part of a major metropolitan area would have to be located within that specific suburban area, period. No matter how far it is from the business community, or whether the traffic pattern passed the city of license by, the studio has to be right there."

Instead of focusing on serving their audiences from their established, cost-efficient cluster facilities, licensees would have to relocate their operations to an area that may or may not have meaning to the bulk of the station's listeners. If enacted, four of Greater Media's Philadelphia stations would have to move approximately 300 yards to be officially within their cities of license. The Greater Media Boston stations would have to be moved to four different studio locations.

While larger owners may be able to cope with the change and add staff to cover the work of the previously shared services, smaller owners may not be able to endure the financial burden.

Smyth made a call to other broadcasters to show the FCC and legislators that radio stations are serving their audiences. "We need to tell all the untold stories about what we're doing in our communities, from blood drives and pet adoptions, to Fourth of July celebrations and Earth festivals, to election coverage and disaster relief."

NHPR Begins Construction on New Facility
Concord, NH - Jun 5, 2008 - New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) begins construction of its new broadcast facility at 2 Pillsbury Street in Concord, NH, this week. NHPR is in the final stage of a $6.5 million capital campaign that has surpassed the $5 million benchmark set by the board to commence the building process. More than 175 individual, corporate, and foundation contributors have donated $5.1 million to date. The new broadcast center doubles the square footage of the station's 10,000 square foot current location at 207 North Main Street.

According to Betsy Gardella, president and CEO of NHPR, the new broadcast center will upgrade dated studio and production facilities. The construction contract for the project has been awarded to North Branch Construction of Concord, NH. The construction process is expected to take six months and NHPR is planning on moving into its new home mid-December 2008.

NHPR's production and broadcast center will be home for up to 60 reporters, producers, hosts, and administrative staff.

Neutrik Adds Signature Hologram to Thwart Counterfeiters
Las Vegas, NV - Jun 2, 2008 - Neutrik continues its fight against counterfeiting by identifying its products with a unique hologram of the Neutrik name and logo. To avoid unauthorized exports of Neutrik products from the U.S. to Europe, all shipments are specially marked on the individual packing and the carton packages "designed and manufactured for the U.S. market." If products with this mark appear outside the U.S., Neutrik is asking its customers to inform them, so the company can take appropriate actions.

AEQ, Audemat Form Sales Alliance

Wegener Partners with Muzak on In-Store Music and Messaging Service
Duluth, GA - Jun 4, 2008 - The Muzak Encompass LE2 digital music delivery service is a satellite media distribution with media players and content management technology developed by Wegener. The Muzak system is planned for deployment to tens of thousands of locations throughout the United States.

Encompass LE2 allows its customers to view and update their music program selections, scheduling and preferences using a Web-based user interface. Users can also create multiple zones of music throughout their business space; customize schedules and playlists according to business types, regions, promotions, or other criteria; and upload and schedule in-store messages anytime. The music and messaging play from the same media player, which also stores back-up music.

Sales Call Dark Horse Productions has partnered with Jetcast Internet Streaming in the recent launch of The Best of Everything, a free music channel available online. The continuous programming is available worldwide, 24/7 at Radio One and Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) have chosen Media Monitors as their data research engine. Radio One will use all four services: Radio, Local Cable, Newspaper and Broadcast TV. SBS will use the Radio service.
Radio One will use the service in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, St. Louis and Washington, DC.
Spanish Broadcasting System will use the service in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Miami. Volomedia has signed agreement for advertising sales, insertion and reporting services for video and audio podcast content to several companies, including and Public Radio International. Destiny Media Technologies has signed an exclusive agreement with CO5 Music. CO5 will make the Play MPE digital delivery system available to its label clients for all releases. CO5 Music consists of CO5 Nashville, CO5 Urban, CO5 Sales and Marketing and CO5 A&R.

NRSC-5 Update Published
Washington - Jun 2, 2008 - The National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) has published the NRSC-5-B In-band/on-channel Digital Radio Broadcasting Standard, which was adopted by the Digital Radio Broadcast (DRB) Subcommittee at the April 12, 2008, meeting of the group. This document and the associated reference documents are available for free download at

NRSC-5 was first adopted in April 2005 and revised in September 2005 as NRSC-5-A. The standard sets the requirements for broadcasting digital audio and ancillary data signals in the AM and FM radio bands. It is structured as a main document, which provides an overview of the AM and FM IBOC systems designed by Ibiquity Digital (and upon which the standard is based), and a set of reference documents authored by Ibiquity with input from the NRSC that provide the detailed information needed to construct compatible equipment. NRSC-5-A differed from the original document in that it specified a mechanism for transmission of advanced data services.

This latest version includes substantive but relatively minor changes and editorial revisions designed to make the document easier to understand and more complete. None of these changes are expected to cause any backward compatibility issues with HD Radio receivers.
