Accidental EAN Message Sent in Illinois
Chicago - Jun 26, 2007 - During morning drive on June 26, an accidental Emergency Activation Notification (EAN) was sent through the Emergency Alert System. An EAN message code is designed to be used as a means for the President to address the nation through all broadcast radio and TV stations. The accidental message was sent during a test.

According to reports, an emergency management office was testing the system, which was supposed to be off line. The test instead was inadvertently distributed through the EAS network. Unfortunately, the system performed as it should have and relayed the false message through its channels. No explanation has yet been given as to why an active alert code was used instead of a test code.

The message was distributed through WGN-AM, and that station's audio signal was carried through to many stations throughout Illinois and in the St. Louis area.

Denmark Radio Selects Arbitron PPM
New York - Jun 25, 2007 - The radio industry in Denmark has selected the Arbitron Portable People Meter (PPM) system as its electronic audience measurement system. The five-year contract was awarded to TNS Gallup, an international licensee to the Arbitron PPM technology.

Beginning in January 2008, a national panel of 750 Danish consumers will be equipped with the Arbitron PPM to collect overnight radio listening data. Danish broadcasters will analyze the ratings at one-minute increments and use the data for commercial sales and for program planning.

The PPM encoding system will also be used by the Danish television industry beginning in the fall of this year to identify the programming sources for the set-top push-button people meters operated by TNS in Denmark. Since 2001, TNS has also used the Arbitron PPM in Singapore to identify the programming sources in set-top push-button people meters.

Clear Channel Signs Multi-Year Agreement for Arbitron PPM in 46 Markets
New York - Jun 26, 2007 - Clear Channel Radio has signed a multi-year agreement for the Aribtron Portable People Meter radio ratings services in 46 markets when those services are rolled out by Arbitron. The agreement encompasses all Clear Channel radio stations in those markets that Arbitron has converted or is planning to convert to the Portable People Meter ratings methodology by the end of 2010.

By the end of 2010, Arbitron is scheduled to deploy the Portable People Meter in the top 50 markets in place of the paper and pencil diary method that the company has employed to collect radio audience estimates since 1965.

FCC Issues NPRM on XM/Sirius Merger
Washington - Jun 25, 2007 - The FCC has issued a request for comments on the proposed XM/Sirius merger. The NPRM notes that the original satellite digital audio radio services were created on the basis that a single entity could not own both licenses. The FCC seeks comment on whether the language in the original ruling constitutes a binding rule and, if so, whether the Commission should waive, modify or repeal the prohibition. If the prohibition is waived, the FCC will then decide if the merger serves the public interest.

FCC Announces Agenda for Public Hearing on Localism
Washington - Jun 25, 2007 - The Federal Communications Commission released further details of its previously announced Portland, ME, field hearing regarding localism. The hearing will be held on June 28 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Portland High School.

Harris Transfers Radio equipment Sales to SCMS
Cincinnati and Pineville, NC - Jun 29, 2007 - Harris and SCMS have reached a business agreement for Harris to transfer the sale of third-party radio products to SCMS. The business agreement goes into effect on July 2.

By eliminating the direct sale of third-party equipment except for package deals, Harris states that the move "will enable Harris to concentrate resources on creating and broadcast transmission and studio products. Harris will continue to offer third-party products as part of transmitter and studio systems."

Eaton Acquires Pulizzi Engineering
Cleveland - Jun 19, 2007 - Eaton Corporation has acquired Pulizzi Engineering, a manufacturer of ac power distribution, ac power sequencing, redundant power and remote-reboot power management systems.

The Pulizzi product line will continue to be sold under the Pulizzi name.

Harris Announces Channel Partner Initiative for Radio
Cincinnati - Jun 28, 2007 - Harris has created a North American Channel Partners team for the company's radio broadcast market. The team includes 10 U.S. and three Canadian companies, including dealers, distributors and systems integrators that will help Harris extend its reach into small- and mid-sized markets. The Channel Partners also enable Harris to offer new value-added services, including planning and design assistance, disaster recovery, regionalized field resources, and specialized integration teams.

The team will work with the existing Harris radio sales staff and will report to Mark Goins, radio systems and consoles sales manager, and Chris Pannell, manager of North American radio sales.

Symetrix Appoints Murray as Western Regional Sales Manager
Mountlake Terrace, WA - Jun 29, 2007 - Symetrix has appointed Tim Murray to the position of western regional sales manager. Murray is based in southern California and will report directly to Paul Roberts, Symetrix director of sales.

Murray has more than 20 years of experience in the pro audio industry. He served as national sales manager for Xantech, director of international sales and marketing for Otari and western regional sales manager for Sennheiser. In his new position, Murray will develop new sales relationships, handle existing customers and provide rep and dealer training.

AES Announces Convention Keynote Speaker
New York - Jun 22, 2007 - Daniel Levitin, published author; head of the McGill University Laboratory for Music Perception, Cognition and Expertise; musician; producer; and former stand-up comedian, will deliver the keynote address at the Audio Engineering Society 123rd Convention on Oct. 5 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York.

Levitin's book, This Is Your Brain on Music, serves as a jumping off point, for his address. He will explore a number of recent findings in how music affects the brain, neurochemistry and mood. Levitin also takes up the previously inexplicable phenomenon that enables human beings to identify the title and artist of certain songs by a single fleeting chord.

Turner Joins BE as Eastern Sales Manager
Quincy, IL - Jun 22, 2007 - Broadcast Electronics has appointed Lynn Turner as eastern regional sales manager. Effective June 25, Turner will oversee sales for BE studio and RF products for the territories of Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

She was previously a district sales manager for Harris. Turner joined the family radio business, Wagner Broadcasting, just out of high school and has worked in a variety of capacities, including programming, on-air, sales, business management and technical support.

In her technical support role, she oversaw two FM power increases, two studio remodels and one synchronous booster project; she planned, managed and implemented these.

Frank Luntz to Keynote NAB Radio Show.
Washington - Jun 28, 2007 - Author and consultant Dr. Frank Luntz will provide the keynote address on Sept. 27 during The NAB Radio Show in Charlotte, NC. Expanding on his book, Words that Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear, Luntz will offer attendees insight into how word choice can positively affect their stations. Lunt's book has been on best-seller lists in the political and business fields. By investigating the art and science of language creation, Words that Work examines how the simple choice of words can change the course of history.

Axia Iprobe Now Shipping
Cleveland - Jun 29, 2007 - Axia Audio is now shipping Iprobe, a set of tools for network maintenance and diagnostics to manage, update, and remotely control Axia IP audio networks. Iprobe provides Axia administrators access to information about and control over their IP audio network.

The software was demonstrated at NAB2007.
