Zurich - May 21, 2013 - In mid-May, approximately 80 representatives of the Swiss automotive industry, the Swiss Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) the Swiss Federal Roads Office FEDRO, SRG SSR, SwissMediaCast, Romandie Mdias, the German Fraunhofer research organization and ARD, all met in Zurich at the invitation of MCDT to discuss DAB+ car radio. "Delegates gave their unanimous backing to DAB+ car radio" according to MCDT. The underlying message of the Automobile Workshop was that it is time for a concerted effort to promote DAB+ car radio still further, so that DAB+ can become fully established throughout the car radio market over the next two to three years.

There are already 1.2 million digital radios in use in Switzerland, but only 10,000 drivers currently listen to digital radio. Overall, around 70 percent of the Swiss population listens to the radio while driving, so this area offers enormous growth potential, as the Automobile Workshop illustrated.

More and more private broadcasting companies are starting up DAB+ transmissions soon in Switzerland. SRF's regional newsmagazine shows will be available in the German-speaking areas of Switzerland, in addition to Lichtenstein. In French-speaking Switzerland, 16 commercial radio stations will available via DAB+ by the end of this year. Additionally, 2014 will see the expansion of the availability of DAB+ in tunnels in Switzerland.
