Wangen, Switzerland - Jan 8, 2014 - On Jan. 1, 2014 two new DAB+ networks were activated in the Berne/Freiburg area and eastern Switzerland. SwissMediaCast selected VDL (Lyon, France) and Sumatronic (Untergeri, Switzerland) to supply DAB+ encoding, multiplexing head-end systems, plus installation and support services. The selection was made following extensive commercial and technical evaluations.

The two new transmission networks are the second phase in the roll-out a total of five regional DAB+ networks for the third DAB-Layer in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, with the remaining two networks planned for launch in 2015/2016. The first network was launched on Dec. 1, 2012, covering the Zurich, Aargau and Schaffhausen areas.

The VDL DAB+ Multiplexers are located at the SwissMediaCast Playout Center in Zurich, alongside the existing VDL DAB+ Multiplexers from the first phase DAB+ networks. DAB+ Audio Encoders are located at the radio station's studios and are connected to the Playout Center via dedicated IP networks.
