CHICAGO — Spanish Broadcasting System’s Aurora, Ill.-licensed WLEY(FM) has chosen a MaxxCasting system to increase its coverage-to-contour ratio and target Spanish-speaking Chicago neighborhoods with its regional Mexican music programming, GeoBroadcast Solutions says.
SBS Vice President of Engineering Erik Peterson learned about MaxxCasting during a listening test for Boston’s WXRV, and noted the smooth transitions between nodes as well as applications for his own station, according to Geobroadcast.
In a press release, GeoBroadcast Solutions Chief Technology Officer Bill Hieatt said, “While WLEY’s contour covers the market pretty well, the areas that they had signal difficulties within happen to be the some of the most important demographic areas for their business. I would estimate that 70% of the PPMs for Hispanic radio in the region are located in the Pilsen neighborhood, which is also a good indicator of the WLEY audience’s geographic concentration. With MaxxCasting, WLEY’s signal can be decoded into these meters considerably more proficiently than that of the station’s direct competitors.”
The WLEY MaxxCasting system features three synchronized nodes in a single-frequency network to overcome the urbanization multipath issues. The low-height, low-power nodes are targeted to fill in key listening areas, with the MaxxCasting SFN architecture providing seamless transitions as drivers move between transmitters.
Each node in the WLEY MaxxCasting system features a GatesAir Flexiva FAX transmitter operating at 99 Watts and uses GatesAir Intraplex IP networking solutions to simulcast and synchronize live content.
Additionally, this installation was designed for four or more stations to share the same site. One additional station has already planned to join the WLEY SFN infrastructure, the company says.
