DIAMOND BAR, Calif.Modulation Index has announced that it will add xHE-AAC encoding to its list of supported codecs. Designed for speech and music transmission at bit-rates as low as 16kbs for stereo, the xHE-AAC is the low bit-rate extension of AAC audio codec.

The xHE-AAC enables streaming services to operate at lower data rates through its coding efficiency. This can improve the listening experience by reducing buffering times and increasing stream reliability.

In addition to streaming applications, xHE-AAC is the standard codec for Digital Radio Mondiale and is widely available in DRM receivers and professional broadcast equipment.

A patent pool for xHE-AAC is currently under development by VIA Licensing. The patent license for the xHE-AAC is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2016.
