Apple Gets Permission to Test Millimeter-Wave Propagation Characteristics

CUPERTINO, Calif.� Back in June, we reported that Apple had submitted an application before the FCC to make use of the millimeter-wave bands for experimentation in the vicinity of their Cupertino headquarters. The commission has now granted that request, according to lightreading.com.

In their application, Apple told the commission that their intent is to assess cellular link performance in direct path and multipath environments between base station transmitters and receivers using this spectrum. The company will use components from A.H. Systems, Analog Devices Inc. and Rohde and Schwarz in the tests.

�That focus appears to suggest that these trials are early-stage tests of the capabilities of mmWave technology. In other words, it is highly unlikely that Apple will be bursting out of the gate with an mmWave iPhone ahead of Samsung Corp., which has been working on mmWave for years,� according to the same article.
