VIENNA The first pilot year of DAB + in Greater Vienna has been very successful according to Digital Radio Austrias recentpress release.

"With the two transmitters on the DC Tower and in Liesing we now open up an area that extends far beyond the northern and eastern border and south to the exchange area. Thus, the 15 digital radio programs could reach around 2.5 million people, said Gernot Fischer, CEO of Digital Radio Austria, one year after the launch of digital radio in Austria. "The response of the population to the reception quality and the new programs has been overwhelmingly positive, which is why the DAB + listeners no longer want to do without the new, diverse offer."

The first data services are also already on air. In addition to the transmission of radio additional services are being tested. These applications include the title and artist of the music piece (DLS +) or the cover art as a Picture-Slideshow.Moreover, Journaline, often described as the "teletext for radio", has been tested. This structured text information can be accessed by means of suitable radio. With DAB + more extensive traffic information can be transmitted much faster and it integrates seamlessly with moreover the digital car radio. For this reason, the automotive industry is enormously interested according to the press release.

Looking to the second year of DAB+ service, 16 stations will be heard via the mux, subject to regulatory approvals. The 16thslot has been held open for the use of ORF, which has so farshown no interest in DAB+."The must-carry frequency of the ORF will soon also be awarded to a private radio station... said Fischer.

From the technical standpoint, the focus in the second year will be the addition of additional data services such as traffic information services in the TPEG standard and Public Protection and Disaster Warning Services (EWS).
