Norway’s Minister of Culture Responds to Shutdown Objections

Norwegian Fishing Association also fights sunsetting, says some fishermen have reported poor DAB reception

OSLO � As reported in Digital Radio Updateseveral days ago, several of Norway�s political parties have put their objections to the impending sunsetting of FM there in letters to the Ministry of Culture.

Now joining the Center party and the Progressive party in objecting is Norwegian fishing association Norges Fiskarlag,according toTelecompaper. The association's director, Kjell Ingebrigtsen, said the plan is �almost comical, given Norway's large fisheries sector and other maritime industries.� The association said it has learned that no maritime coverage measures have been taken for DAB radio, and some fishermen have reported poor DAB reception.

Norway�s Minister of CultureLinda Hofstad Hellelandhas already responded to the correspondence from Ib Thomsen of the Progressives.�In her reply rejecting Thomsen�s concerns, she said there was no reason to postpone the impending change, while emphasizing that several other European countries also have plans to shut off FM eventually, such as Denmark.� She also asserted that Swedenhas notshelved its digital transition plans, and that in fact Sweden�s plans depend on developments in Norway, �
