Ofcom Extends Small-Scale DAB Trials

LONDON�The UK�s Office of Communications is extending the nine-monthsmall scale DAB trialsfor a further two years.

The small, lower power multiplexes are on-air in a number of areas: Bristol, Manchester, Portsmouth, London, Cambridge, Aldershot, Brighton & Hove, Norfolk, Glasgow and Birmingham.

Around 60 stations are part of the tests, which could possibly have faced being switched off if the nine-month trial was allowed to end, according toradiotoday.co.uk.

The UK�s first experimental small scale DAB multiplex was set up in 2012; Ofcom engineer Rashid Mustaphawas granted a test license and installed a low power digital radiotransmitter on a Brighton roof-top. The test successfully delivered a reliable, high quality digital radio broadcast.�

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is funding Ofcom�s research in to how small stations can access DAB digital radio and the equipment available for these trials.
