JAKARTAThe Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is delighted to welcome the Indonesian public broadcaster,Radio Republik Indonesiaas a new member of the Consortium. DRM and RRI have signed a cooperation agreement to introduce DRM technology in Indonesia starting in 2016.

Indonesia is a challenging broadcasting environment, replete with coastal lowlands, larger islands and mountainous areas. RRI has been exploring ways of overcoming these challenges to provide quality broadcasting services across the entirety of the country, and to that end, conducted a successful DRM30 test in March of this year, an addition to a medium wave test.

Sharad Sadhu, Independent Media Consultant, wrote about the DRM test results from earlier this year inDRM news. There is no dispute that digital radio will provide many advantages in Indonesia (as in other countries covering large geographical areas). To summarize, on the basis of equal transmitter power, the digital coverage is much more extended than the analog coverage. Alternatively, keeping the coverage same, the power requirement at the transmitter end are substantially lower delivering thus energy cost savings.
