PARIS For residents of 40,000 households in Bagnolet, Montreuil, Romainville, Les Lilas and XXth arrondissement of Paris, all of whom live within of 1.8 km of the towers of Mercuriales, reception of about a third of the citys FM stations has been problematic for many years. The close proximity of the VHF transmitters there wreaks havoc with local FM receivers.

Good news has come to these radio listeners though, brought on by the introduction of digital radio in Paris. Seven programs of Radio France are now broadcast in the digital format, as well as those of some smaller stations, thanks to transmission provider Towercast, who installed a digital radio transmitter mux at the top of Mercuriales.

Sanctioned by Frances CSA,the experimentwill last until at least March of 2017. Its quite a win for Michael Leon, an activist that launched the battle in 2002, with petitions, meetings with elected officials and other actions. The idea of using digital radio was generated among the experts of the association in 2008, according toleparisien.fr.
