NEW YORKThe recently released IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report reveals that 2014 was a record year for digital advertising revenues, reaching $49.5 billion. The final results indicate a 16 percent increase from 2013s $42.8 billion, marking the fifth consecutive year with double-digit growth.

The biggest growth came from mobile advertising, which saw a 76 percent boost in revenue from $7.1 billion in 2013 to $12.1 billion in 2014. Mobile advertising is now the second largest format, accounting for 25 percent of 2014 total revenue.

High double-digit growth in mobile advertising is a reflection of the continued shift in consumer behavior away from the desktop and toward mobile devices, said David Silverman, partner, PwC US. A prominent rise in social, a significant mobile activity, is driving growth in advertising revenue as consumers spend more time connected.

Other major findings include a 17 percent growth in the fourth quarter compared to 2013, with a total of $14.2 billion. Digital video generated $3.3 billion for the full year and social media came in at $7 billion, a 57 percent increase over 2013 ($4.5 billion).

The IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report, conducted independently by the New Media Group of PwC, includes data concerning online advertising from Web sites, commercial online services, free email providers and all other companies selling online advertising.
