AUSTIN, Texas The Wi-Fi Alliance recently announced the launch of its WiGig certification program, which is designed to further the spread of the 802.11ad specification and low-latency, multi-gigabit wireless broadband.

The Alliance is also announcing the first certified WiGig devices, which include chipsets and reference designs from Intel Corp., Qualcomm Inc., and WiGig adapter reference designs from Peraso and Socionext, and the Latitude E7450/70 computer from Dell Technologies, according tolightreading.com.

Most notable about the WiGig standard is the fact that it operates in the 60GHz frequency band, and its expected to deliver low-latency connectivity combined with high-speed data rates up to 8 Gbit/sbut, since it is a line-of-sight technology, it has a standard range only up to 10 meters. Its possible the range may be extended, of course, using specialized antennas. In fact, as weve previously covered in Digital Radio Update, there are many technical issues with the use of millimeter wave bands, not due to engineering so much, as the good oldlaws of physics.

Despite its physical limits,FacebookandGooglehave plans for the millimeter wave bands.
